EHE Guardians @ Brashier Bengals

We had an interim coach in this game due to the fact our normal coach had announced he would coach a different team for a game to raise some money for charity or something of that sort. So we were coached by Mr Howard (Peter's dad) and his son Ben Howard(Peter's brother). The other team lined up in what looked like a 3-2 or a very messy 2-3. We started off the game terrible and neither team scored the first two minutes. The refs needless to say didn't help us a bit. I would like to say they were power-happy whistle freaks. Some of the bad first half calls included an offensive foul on MO where he was knocked down and the defender was not budged, and a travel called on me where i stole the ball and was tripped from behind. I stumbled and fell on the basketball to which they called a travel. I started off the game with a jumper in their lazy zone. We brought it down again and I received the ball. I turned to the goal and made a thread-the-needle pass to MO and he executed by making his layup. At halftime we were up by about 8. In the third quarter MO found his stroke and got 4 quick points, but due to a minor ankle injury and the fact that he could not get open he was forced to pass the ball away the rest of the time. Later in the third quarter I drew what i thought was a good charge and was called a charge but had many reports from teammates and family after the game saying that I flopped. Regardless we got the call. Also I was embarrassed because I had the ball passed all the way from the three point line through my legs and out of bounds. To start the fourth quarter Brashier made a quick run and came within two. But they were quickly silenced by the excellent shooting and free throws of Will Whiteside and ended up winning 36-28. it was not our best game but we got a win for the interim coach and stayed undefeated. Our next game will be our hardest yet against the Spartanburg Eagles.

Oconee Christian vs EHE Guardians

We won the tip and began the game. We started off strong and took a quick first quarter lead. It was a very boring controlled game until tthe fourth quarter when we started to give up our fourth quarter lead. Oconee had 3 threes and came within 9 points, but the excellent play of Matt harms carried us through the fourth quarter. 9 of his 13 points came in the fourth. Near the end of the game Matt received the ball in the post. He was pushed and no foul was called. During the play while he was being pushed he tossed the ball towards the basket and it went up and through the basket and fell out. It was hilarious. We ended up winning 57-41. This advanced us to 7-0 Our next game is next Tuesday against Brashier and hopefully we can stay unbeaten.

EHE Guardians vs. Greenville Homeschool Hurricanes

Only 4 days after Thanksgiving the EHE Guardians were back at it again trying to maintain they're unbeaten streak. We were bound to be a little bit rusty in this game and it sure showed. We won the tip but were down by a few points early. We came back in the first quarter due to the shooting spark of Will Whiteside. We controlled the game until the fourth quarter when we once again proceeded to slowly start to give up the game. Our nine point 4th quarter lead was decreased to 1 point. Later in the 4th Will and Caleb both committed their 5th foul and were out of the game. Off of two free throws Greenville took the lead with a minute left. Next time down the court off a missed free throw Kai ripped down an emphatic rebound and was fouled. We were in the bonus which sent Kai to the free throw line. The gym was rocking with noise and excitement. Kai missed a close free throw which lead to a foul by me. They missed the first free throw and the ball went out of bounds In our favor of possession. We broke the press and with 15 seconds left I took a beautiful pass by Mo and hit a layup which almost fell right off the rim and missed. My head would've belonged to Coach who was frustrated after a long game of missed layups. But it went in, put us up 41-40 and the crowd went bananas. It was louder than I'd ever heard it. Anthony intercepted the ball away at the other end of the court and was intentionally fouled which meant we got two free throws and the ball. Anthony bricked the first free throw and Greenville homeschool called a timeout. We all told Anthony he was going to make the free throw and sure enough it swished right through the hoop. We inbounded the ball with 7 seconds left. Anthony found a running Kai wide open at midcourt for a long pass but when Kai caught the ball he took an incidental extra step and traveled. So with 4 seconds left they had the ball with a chance to win or tie. They inbounded it and ran their best 3 point shooter off some screens and he ended up with the ball. He checked the clcok and then shot the ball for the win. It hit the back rim and hung on the front rim for a second. There was complete stillness, Nobody moved. All of us were seeing a De Ja Vu of our game against OLR last year. The ball slowly rolled off the rim and bounced to the floor. We had pulled out a very close ball game. Our next game is tomorrow against Oconee.

EHE Guardians @ Oakwood Eagles

The JV girls started off the night strong by starting the game on a 17-0 run. The defense for this team sparked the offense with many fast breaks usually leading to baskets. The main contributers to these fast breaks were Caitlin Cash, Tanya Mann, Caroline Denton and Audrey Birchfield. Andrea McConnell also contributed to this first half route with some beautiful jumpers. With the first half coming to a close Audrey Birchfield who was pulled up from the middle school team to play because of some injuries intercepted a pass and took it all the way to the other end of the court beating the buzzer with a layup. The second half was not much different than the first. Kaitlyn O'Brien had 6 second half points all coming off offensive rebounds. Aryn Baxa also played an excellent game and was very close to scoring off of two free throws. They played a great game and came away with a win in their first game of the year.

The JV Boys were hampered with injuries and sicknesses coming into their game. Will had a 102 degrree fever and I sprained my ankle. Matt Harms was under the weather also and was limited in his amount of playing time because of it. On the first play of the game MO drove to the basket and missed a layup. Things did not look good for a few minutes. Coach called a timeout and calmed everyone down. From then on it was the MO and Caleb show. They took their men to the basket and scoring about every time. Right before the end of the first quarter Anthony Porter intercepted an inbounds pass and hit a fadeaway jumper to beat the halftime buzzer. This took us to the highest point total weve ever had in the first half of a game at 28 points. The second half was not much different from the first with MO and Caleb dominating and John Compton adding an extra 5 points. Near the end of the half Oakwood made a run while the second string was in. It wasnt nearly enough to pull it out though. PC and Elliot were both very close to scoring each going 0-2 from the field. It is definately the best game we have played all year which means we are playing better every game. I will not post anything for the next two games because I will not be here but I hope we do well. Go GUARDIANS!!!

EHE Guardians vs. Tabernacle Rams

From the opening tip we knew we were in for a challenge even though 3 of Tabernacles starters could not play. On the opening tip a 5"6 black point guard outjumped a 6"5 Matt Harms to win the tip. Matt didnt do bad at all the other kid just had mad hops. The madness continued when the small point guard intercepted a pass and darted down the court for an acrobatic layup. This rattled our team a bit and after the first quarter we were down 8-5. The first quarter highlight was Peter Howard driving all the way to the goal for an excellent layup. The second quarter was back and forth but we had edged out a 17-16 lead due to the excellent shooting of Mo Will and Peter. In the third quarter it looked as if we had pulled away and were going to win, due to Mo hitting 5-6 free throwns in about a minute. Tabernacle did not go down. Their point guard led them on a run until it was a tie ball game. With 20 seconds left the little point guard pick-pocketed Will and rushed down the court for a layup tp tie the game at 41. We brought the ball down the court and gave it to Caleb down low. He missed a layup but got his rebound and put it back up and got fouled. He made two free throws to put us up 43-41. Tabernacle brought the ball down and their point guard drove towards the goal and I drew the charge. Game over right. No it was called a block and Tabernacle had 2 more seconds to win the game or tie. They threw the ball in and were trapped in a corner to end the game. It wasnt our best game but we still got out of there with a win. Our next game is Friday @ Oakwood.

EHE Guardians @ Easley Christian Eagles

After much preperation the JV Boys played their first game of the year against Easley Christian. For a few minutes the game looked like it was going great and we were playing very well up 6-0 in the first minute. But it turned ugly fast when EHE started missing layups and dropping passes. At the end of the first quarter Easley Christian had worked its way into an 8-5 ball-game. After a fiery first quarter speech Coach Whiteside had the Guardians ready to strike. The always reliable Diamond Press brought us many layups from Will, Mo, and Caleb. The new big man in our lineup this year (Matthew Harms) played well down low scoring in the second quarter on a layup. Peter Howard had 3 fouls in the first half forcing Mark Dibler to jump in and play point guard. With time winding down in the first half I received a long pass from Anthony, but my unawareness of how much time was on the clock made the buzzer beater a second too late failing to count. At halftime our lead was 20-7 meaning we outscored Easley Christian 14-2 in the second quarter. Early in the second half Easley Christian started lighting it up from behind the three point line and pulled within 11, but that was as far as they would get. The second half was capped off by great defense by Elliot and PC, and with an excellent pass from Kai to JC for a layup. The game ended 37-22 in favor of the Guardians. The game wasnt the best weve played but we pulled out the win. Our next game is November 18th against Tabernacle.

Tournament Weekend

After a devastating loss to Greenville Classical the night before we were ready to take on the Anderson Christian who defeated us in a comeback fashion on our last regular season game of the year. This time we were about to play against them in the consolation round of the season ending tournament. It took a while for either team to score but the game got going when David Rice blew by the big man from Anderson Christian for an easy layup. Early second quarter Will Whiteside was charged with his third foul causing him to go to the bench. This was a devastating loss......so we thought, but our backup Guard Samuel Black played spectactular offense and defense. Also, bench players Daniel Baxa and Jake Stribling scored in the first half on outstanding layups. We finished the half on about a 9-0 run capped off by a fadeaway jumper at the halftime buzzer by me. With seven seconds left Daniel inbounded it to Anthony and Anthony passed it to Jake, Jake made an outstanding bounce pass before I hit the shot. In the second half their all-around amazing center. They got within only seven points when Peter Howard drew an obvious charge. As the seconds ticked off the third quarter clock Mo fired up a three and it went right in. In the fourth quarter we introduced the newly found game called we scream you scream. When we shot free throws the whole game the Anderson Christian Lions would scream to try to distract us. Most of the game it worked but in the fourth quarter we decided to make a little fun out of it. They would scream at the beginning of the shot and if we we made it we would scream back. The last three free throws of the game we made which was enough to make them stop. We ended up with a very demading winning taking third place. Some other highlights from the game were Anthony's great (but funny) attempt to draw a charge. Will's excellent Jump shots and PC's amazing defense. We ended the season with the bang, and a little payback.

St. Josephs vs. EHE Guardians

Once again we were up against another Catholic school this one being from St. Josephs. Our record against Catholics this year is 0-3 and here we w were up against another one here. The first half was a shootout with the halftime score being 22-20. We were started off by Will with two layups and then Mo took it from there. St. Josephs was lead by their tiny but very aggressive point guard. Continually throughout the game we were baffled and confused trying to break the press that we use ourselves. In the second half after breaking the press the ball came to me and I dribbled the ball towards the basket and their big man with Mo coming from the other side. After getting a little closer I decided that the only way I could get it to Mo was passing it through the big mans legs. The conclusion.......not so good. The ball bounced through his legs and out of bounds. With a minute left in the game St. Jospehs brought the ball down and attempted to milk the clock and clinch a win. They took it down to 10 seconds and peter ended up with the ball he passed it over a defenders head to me. I took a few dribbles and heaved a shot up. It hit the backboard and then the rim but came off. It made it 0-4 against Catholic Schools. 0-3 against Catholic schools with royal blue jerseys. Mo was the man who kept us in the game but we couldnt pull it out at the end. The final score was 35-32. We have two weeks off until our next game on February 12th.

Our Lady Of The Rosary vs. EHE Guardians

This year against Catholic Schools we are 0-2 losing one game by 30 and another by nine. Today we came out confident. Maybe just a little too confident. Will's first few shots were nowhere near the goal. OLR had a 6 foot 1 center who was a dominant force for them throughout the game. Anthony scored our first two points on a breakaway. The second quarter was back and forth but a few late scores gave us momentum into halftime. At halftime the score was 21-16 OLR. Halftime seemed like it took years but finally the third quarter began. In the third quarter I made a terrible and humerous mistake by passing it to the other team who was also wearing the color royal blue which is the color of our away jerseys also. The third quarter was just like the second with the game wobbling back and forth. In the fourth quarter the game got intense. Daniel Baxa a clutch bench player lately brought down a needed rebound and then got fouled on the other end. He made one of two free throws and put us in the lead. The score was 32-31 us in the lead and OLR with the ball, OLR fed it to their big man he went up and got fouled by Will. He made one of the two free throws and tied the game. Coach then called a timeout and worked out a play for Mo to tie the game. Mo ended up missing a three off the front rim. OLR pushed the ball up the court and gave it to their big man. He layed it up and in and put them up 34-32. We brought the ball into the frontcourt and gave the ball to Will. Will dribbled around a defender and pulled up for a short jumper. The ball bounced on the rim a few times and then dropped. With 13 seconds left we set up our press hoping for a steal and a basket to win. They broke it immediately and gave it to their SG who then heaved a shot from halfcourt with 8 seconds left and it sailed right through. Swish. The clock ran out leaving all of us and most of the fans stunned. They had won 37-34. It was one of those March Madness miracles except its January and we're middle schoolers. Our Coach said he would give the game ball (If we had one) to Daniel Baxa for stellar defense and a clutch free throw. Our next game is January 31st against St. Josephs.

Greenville Classical Lions @ EHE Guardians

Sick. This the word that described the status of Matthew O'Brien and our third quarter of play. Matthew O'Brien could not play today after having a high temperature and we all hope he feels better soon. The first half was back and forth, but a few three pointers by Greenville Classical put them up 18-11 at halftime. Right before halftime with 2.5 seconds left Peter received the inbounds pass and hurled it up to me. I caught the ball and with 2 hands tried to sidearm it towards the goal. I got fouled. I could not convert but 1 of the three freebies. Peter afterwards stole the inbounds pass but could not get a shot off. I had 4 baskets and 3 free throw at halftime. Right after halftime Will got us going by singlehandedly dribbling through their defense and getting an easy layup. This would be the only points that we would get in our terribly played third quarter. The tall 6 footer for Greenville Classical had a killer turnaround jumper which caused us some trouble and some precious points. In the fourth quarter Daniel Baxa received a pass on the wing, and sensing the pressure on him blew right around the defender . He did the move I would now like to call the Jump n' Dribble. Daniel jumped like he was doing a power hop and dribbled at the same time before putting it up for an amazing layup. Throughout the night David beasted the boards as if he had something against them. Rebound after Rebound came down to him. One possession late in the game Greenville Classical brought it back down and passed around, over, through and behind us for about 2 minutes. Greenville Classical won 30-21. It was a good game and maybe if we wouldve had Mo it wouldve been a different story.

Battle of the Brothers: EHE Guardians vs. Siloam Eagles

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to play against your brothers team in basketball. Well it happened tonight. Anthony Porter and the EHE Guardians went up against his brother Cody Porter and the Siloam Eagles. 10 seconds into the game David already had us on the board after hitting a short jumper. Then we went right into the press causing 4 or 5 easy turnovers all leading to points. On our end after working the ball around it got down to David who threw it off the back board to Mo who threw it again off the backboard to David. This resulted in a Siloam rebound. Still in the first quarter Jake ran off a pick and then off another pick right to the basket for an easy layup. In the second quarter is when the fun began with us going man to man and Anthony getting to do the thing he wanted to do most in this game: Guard his brother. As time ran out in the first half Anothony nailed a last second shot sending us into halftime with a 32-6 lead. In the second half Coach Whiteside put in all five people currently sitting on the bench into the game. Due to a bleeding finger Jake was taken out and Peter put in. Peter made some great breakaway passes, one being to Daniel and the other being to me. Both were converted into layups. A few minutes later coach put Jake back in along with everyone else who had come out. Jake played excellent point guard. Late in the second half still in man defense Daniel and the Siloam Guard both grabbed a chest pass ; But Daniel had tried to catch it and take it for a breakaway layup. When he grabbed the ball and took it he dragged the Siloam player with him. The resistance of the Siloam player did not allow him to get very far resulting in a jump ball. PC and Samuel played excellent defense off the bench today causing in some easy intercepted passes. Our next game is Friday January 18th against Greenville Classical.
We ended up winning 59-14. Here are the individual stats from the game.

Spartanburg Eagles vs. EHE Guardians

After the opening prayer being interrupted twice, once by a scoreboard buzzer and once by a cell phone the game began. We got off to a hot start with Will scoring our first six points, but Spartanburg answered well coming back with five of their own. Still in the first half Spartanburg moved the ball around to a man open for a three pointer. He fired the shot and it banked it in. Our coach and most people on our team would call this a "Luck Shot" and I agree it was. Mo was at his most aggressive in this game driving to the goal almost everytime he got the ball. Most times he drew a foul. There was one point in the game where Spartanburg put the diamond press on us and we stumbled. They went on about an eight point run which in my opinon was where Spartunburg grabbed the rest of the remaining momentum and ran with it. There offense and defense was led by a very talented point guard who probably had around 25 points. We ended up losing by 8 points the final score being 46-38. We played hard and to the fiinish but couldn't pull it out. Our next game is against Siloam on January 15th.

Camperdown Academy Jaguars @ EHE Guardians

First game after Christmas we came out a little rusty but as the game went on we started hitting more shots. Late in the first half Will stole the ball and passed it downcourt to Peter who was hacked on his layup, but behind him the point guard who was very perturbed by Will's aggressiveness purposely pushing him in the back sending him flying to the floor. Unfortunately the referee did not see this. Thinking the foul was called against him Will took the free throws and hit one of two. After the game when asked what it felt like to be shoved to the floor he said, "It didnt hurt I just did a good job acting." At halftime we were up 17-10 The Diamond press really worked today, we had steal after steal after steal after steal leading to basket after basket after basket after basket. They played a laid back man defense the whole game leaving tons of driving room for Will and MO who each ended up with 13 points at the end of the game. Daniel PC, Anthony and I each had 2 points David had 4. Our backup PG Jake Stribling tremendously improved in the time he played. We ended up winning 38-18 outscoring them 21-8 in th second half. We have a game Jan. 11 against The Spartanburg Eagles who we have already lost to this year. It is another home game for us so I think it will be very close.

Ehe Guardians @ Anderson Christian Lions

They definately werent as good as they were last year but they put up a good fight. We had a few injuries on the team me having a hurt back Will being sick and David recovering from a finger injury. Despite this we were winning at halftime and at a point in the game were up by about 13. When the 2nd string went in Anderson made a nice run to try to comeback and win but it wasn't enough as MO sank two technical foul free throws to ensure a win. The technical foul came from a player stretching his hands over the inbound line after he had aleady received a warning for this. On January 4th we will go up against Camperdown Academy: A Team we shouldve beat by a lot last year but we missed a lot of layups. This is a home game and hopefully we will do better and not come out rusty since it is the first game after Christmas Break.
